Inquire NowAway from all the hustles and bustles of civilization rests a grand cave. A cave that boasts of miracles and Divine presence every single year. Located at a distance of over 140km from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, the cave sits in a quaint village called Pahalgam.
Apart from the picturesque surroundings, pristine rivers and streams and exhilarating weather, what makes the place more alluring is the presence of Shiva. Shiva in the form of Linga. A Shivlinga that manifests itself every year from nothing but ice.
The cave is closed throughout the year except for a few months in summer. Open for pilgrims, the Divine Lord gives darshan to pilgrims and seekers in the form of ice Linga. Overcoming physical hurdles such as altitudes, treacherous terrains and more, pilgrims arrive in groups every year to catch a glimpse of Lord Mahadev.
The Hindu mythology reveals that it was in Amarnath that Lord Shiva explained to Maa Parvati the secrets of life and eternity. When Parvati consistently asked her Divine Consort about the reason behind Her being mortal and Shiva being immortal, He decided to share the secret to Her.
He was looking for a secluded place away from people and children so he could share the mystical secrets on the creation of the universe and immortality. He finally found Amarnath cave to be ideal.
To prepare for the deliverance, He left Nandi at a place called Bail Gaon in Pahalgam. He released the moon from his hair at Chandanwari and the snakes by the banks of Lake Sheshnag.
Here, the ShivLinga is formed by frozen water droplets. The drops of water fall from the roof of the cave to the floor giving rise to an enormous and a Divine stalagmite. This manifestation is worshipped as ShivLinga by Hindus and finds mention in some of the most sacred texts and epics like the Mahabharata and Puranas.
If this isn’t miraculous enough, legend reveals that the Linga shrinks and grows depending on the different phases of the moon. The Linga then reaches its maximum height during summer, when it is opened for seekers.
